It's a spicy street tracker based on the iconic Yamaha RD400
The Yamaha RD series, particularly the RD350, gained a cult following in many parts of the world, including India. While the Yamaha RD400 was never officially sold there, the RD350 offered a thrilling two-stroke experience with a slightly smaller displacement. This Yamaha RD400 by DubStyle Designs serves as an inspiration for those who might want to transform their RD350 into a head-turning street tracker.
DubStyle Designs, which is run by Garett is known for his flat track-inspired street machines. He has added a touch of hot-rod flair to this Yamaha RD 400 which was a project bike. It was a project bike for a date night for him and his wife which has now been turned into a full-fledged street tracker. The final design draws inspiration from iconic flat trackers of the 70s. These feature a fibreglass tail section and a custom subframe with an aggressive kick at the back. The core elements of the design, such as the fibreglass tail section, custom subframe, and repurposed fuel tank from a similar-era motorcycle, can be adapted to the RD350 with careful planning and fabrication skills.
The Yamaha RD400 has a custom saddle with a groovy stitch pattern. This perfectly complements the repurposed aluminium fuel tank from a 1970s Yamaha YZ400 enduro. Up front, a custom-made number board houses a pair of rectangular headlights, adding a touch of functionality to the unique design. Renthal handlebars and grips, upgraded pegs, and foot controls complete the rider interface.
While there are no exact figures, the original 1977 Yamaha RD400 engine produced around 44 bhp and 41 Nm. Given the focus on cosmetic modifications, the engine likely remains mostly stock to retain its classic character.
The exhaust system is a unique combination of a recycled Factory Pipe system and some modified parts. The silencers were hacked off and welded on a pair of FMF cans, creating a custom exhaust to give the iconic ring-ding-ding note.
The suspension gets a significant upgrade with a right-side-up Yamaha R6 fork replacing the original units. An aluminium swingarm from a 1970s Kawasaki takes charge, connected to a pair of Fox shocks. This Yamaha RD400 throws a punch in the looks department with stunning 7-spoke Morris-style wheels. These are sourced from Kawasaki. To ensure proper stopping power which was a weak point with the original brakes, new carriers for the brake rotors were machined. The bike is now equipped with Brembo callipers and Galfer discs. Even smaller parts like the calliper mounts had to be custom-made to perfectly integrate the new components.
This Street Tracker Yamaha RD400 Custom Bike pays homage to the machine's heritage with performance and undeniable visual flair. With careful planning and execution, Indian riders can draw inspiration from this Street Tracker Yamaha RD400 Custom Bike to breathe new life into their beloved Yamaha two-strokes.
