BMW India has introduced a new iX1 electric SUV at a price of Rs. 66.90 Lakhs (ex-showroom). This SUV comes in one fully loaded M Sport variant and xDrive30 specification. The iX1 is BMW's second all-electric SUV in India, following the bigger iX. It is also the brand's third electric vehicle (EV) for this country.

The iX1 is based on the new-gen X1 that was introduced in India earlier this year. It looks almost the same as the petrol or diesel version, with very few differences showing it is electric. Inside, the look is the same as a BMW SUV with an internal combustion engine, including a curved screen setup with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch touch display.

When talking about equipment, the iX1 is very well-equipped with many features. It has adaptive LED headlamps and adaptive suspension for better driving experience. The car also comes with dual-zone climate control to keep both driver and passenger comfortable, a memory function for driver seat settings, a panoramic sunroof for more light inside, connected car technology, a hands-free parking feature which makes parking more manageable and a Harman Kardon sound system for excellent music quality. Safety technologies on board include ADAS functions (advanced driving assistance systems), ESC (electronic stability control), traction control to prevent wheels from slipping and tyre pressure monitoring that ensures tyres are correctly inflated at all times.

Regarding the powertrain, the iX1 has a 66.4 kWh battery pack connected to two electric motors—one motor on each axle. Together, they make 302 bhp and 494 Nm of torque. The SUV is said to go from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.6 seconds. The iX can go up to 440 kilometres. It is at full charge, as per WLTP standards. It also supports fast charging at speeds of up to 11 kW AC and 130 kW DC.

BMW says every electric SUV will include a free 11 kW wall box charger. Owners can also use fast chargers available at BMW dealerships in 35 cities. The 11-kW charger fills the battery from zero to full in about 6.3 hours, while the faster 130-kW DC charger takes around 29 minutes to go from ten per cent to eighty per cent charged.

Exterior Design 

If you remove the green number plate, many people would have trouble telling BMW iX1 from BMW X1. Besides the closed front grille, the iX1 appears much like its petrol-powered version. Even so, the BMW iX1 has a very sporty look and its strong body lines catch the eye. The 18-inch M Sport wheels also give this SUV a more athletic appearance. It makes an impression with a design that is not too flashy or strange.

With sturdy proportions and distinct lines, the first all-electric BMW iX1 becomes your self-assured partner. The prominently upright front part gives a strong impression of presence. The significant square kidney and new L-shape front lights show the impressive BMW face in its latest shape. With its prominent front section and upright proportions, the first completely electric BMW iX1 seems incredibly energetic from the side. The three-dimensional L-shaped rear lights make an undeniably contemporary statement by combining clear glass with a hexagonal design on the side.

Other small design features show this car is an EV. For example, blue circles around all BMW logos, an 'i' mark on the grille, and iX1 labels on the back of the car. But most noticeable are green license plates, which tell that it's an EV.

At the back, the 3D taillamp protrudes from the bodywork, along with additional cuts and creases and a protruding bumper design, making this electric X1 quite handsome. 

Interior and Features

BMW focused a lot on details in the iX1's cabin, and it shows. Every part you touch inside feels unique and excellent. They used leather-like padding and shiny metallic finishes smartly all over the cabin. It makes the inside of the iX1 feel as well-made as pricier luxury cars. That said, the experience is much like what you get in the BMW X1 itself. This increase in quality and feeling of luxury inside the cabin is now standard with new-generation BMWs.

The cockpit is made with much care, putting the cupholders, wireless phone charger that stands up, and a storage tray under the armrest in places to make owning it for a long time easier. People sitting in front also enjoy very comfy seats that give good support and have seat bases you can 

For the inside space, iX1 has enough room to seat four people comfortably. Type-C charging ports are in both rows of seats, and rear passengers also have AC vents. However, there are two areas where it needs to improve compared to the BMW X1. First, the support for under-thigh is just average. Even someone with a height of 5.7 feet may want better support under them. Thighs because their knees can feel slightly up even if they stretch their legs out. The iX1 also does not have rear seats that slide for adjustment like in the X1, and both these things are due to having a battery pack.

The inside layout of the cabin is simple, and using controls is very easy. However, the AC controls are on the touchscreen and may not feel as natural to use as buttons while driving. The AC performance could be better, too, and you might use higher blower speeds to make up for it.

Handling or parking the iX1 is simple because the steering feels light, and its small size makes it easy to manage even in heavy traffic. The iX1 has a 66.4kWh battery that officially offers a range of 417-440 kilometres (WLTP), but realistically, in Indian driving conditions, you can expect around 320-350 kilometres.

The ride is excellent at slow speeds and easily handles small bumps and potholes. Bigger bumps can be felt inside the car, so you should drive extra slowly over more oversized speed breakers, especially if you have passengers with you.

Uneven parts of the road while driving fast on the highway will make you feel the car's weight again, as it takes a little more time to settle. But even on bumpy concrete highways, iX1 feels steady. For this reason, BMW has provided a good balance between ride comfort and handling, where any problems due to heavy battery are noticeable only in some situations.

BMW iX1 Range

BMW's fully electric iX1 gives what no gasoline-powered X1 can – lots of power and good performance. It offers a top speed of 180 kmph., which makes it the most enjoyable X1 in the lineup, which future owners will surely appreciate. The twin-motor EV also has a practical range of 417-440 kilometres, and the high-end cabin provides a real luxury car feeling. Safety 

Aside from safety features like six airbags, front and back parking sensors, and a rear camera, the iX1 also has auto-emergency braking, collision warning, and lane assist. However, at this price point, not having features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-view monitoring, and a surround-view camera (which you can get in other countries with the iX1) is disappointing. The BMW X1 got 5 out of 5 stars for crash safety from Euro NCAP, and the same good results also apply to the BMW iX1.

The EV will directly compete with the Volvo XC40 Recharge and the Volvo C40 Recharge. It can also be viewed as a high-end alternative to the BYD Atto 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
