The Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS is the beginning of a new age in luxury sedans. The EQS is the first model built on a platform specifically designed to support high-end electric cars. Its packaging, materials, aesthetics, and safety systems are optimised to capitalise on electric power's advantages for quiet comfort, generous space, and creative design. 

It is because it is a completely new design that is kept from any fuel-powered model. The EQS's all-electric architecture is the foundation for its "sensual purity," which is evident throughout the exteriors and interiors. The "one bow" design creates a sleek, coupe-like appearance, stretching the bodywork and giving the sedan an elegant yet muscular appeal. 

Its sloped fastback and cab-forward proportions make the cabin more spacious, and its long wheelbase and four-wheel steering combine sumptuous space with agile performance. It gets a Burmester 3D Surround Sound system, an MBUX system presented on a 56-inch hyperscreen, and ambient lighting, among other amenities. 

The EQS has a lithium-ion battery and an automatic transmission that powers both its variants. On a single charge, the range is 580 km for the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ to 857 km for the EQS 580 4MATIC. 

Among the safety features are nine airbags and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including active distance help, braking aid with cross-traffic function, steering assist, and attention assist.

Exterior Design 

The EQS is built on a 'one bow' design philosophy that gives it its distinct taut, coupe-like silhouette. At the front is the Black Panel radiator grille with finely drawn Mercedes stars, which is the highlight of the 580 4MATIC. The 53 4MATIC+  features a "Black Panel" set on a gloss-black background, a three-dimensional display of bright chrome with vertical bars and a huge central symbol. 

The focal point of the rear is the creatively designed LED lighting. The interiors are shaped like a 3D helix that is illuminated and curved. Mercedes-EQ cars are distinguished by their continuous light band at the back, which is also present on the EQS.

The optional advanced Digital Light headlamp technology offers innovative functions like projecting auxiliary markings or warning symbols onto the road surface. The AMG front apron, with its A-wing design, and the rear apron, with its diffuser aspect, are two elements of the aggressive styling of the AMG Line. The 580 4MATIC gets  20-inch AMG 5-spoke light alloy wheels, and the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ gets 21-inch cross-spoke light alloy wheels.

The EQS's purpose-built design achieves aerodynamics that inspire the whole industry. Enhancements to silent comfort, stable handling, driving range, and efficiency include seam sealing and minimisation, wheel design, tyre spoilers at the front of each wheel, extremely smooth underbody panelling, a standard rear lip spoiler, and self-lowering air suspension.

Interior and Features

The Electric Art interior of the EQS radiates progressive luxury in every inch. The comfort seats have lumbar support, comfort head restraints in the front, and contour lighting in ARTICO man-made leather. The 580 4MATIC has sports seats in Nappa leather with red topstitching and a sports steering wheel. The folding rear back seats with a 40/20/40 ratio can turn the sedan into a minivan in seconds. 

The multi-contour ventilated front seats with memory package offer optimal comfort. Other features include active ambient lighting, footwell lamps, Illuminated door handle recesses, Adaptive rear compartment lighting, a Wireless charging system for mobile devices in the front and rear, Illuminated door sill panels with "Mercedes-Benz" lettering, a HEPA filter against airborne pollutants, and an EASY-PACK tailgate.

The aural source is a 15-speaker Burmester 3D Sound system. Multiple screens come together under a single 56-inch span of high-tech glass. The MBUX Hyperscreen uses artificial intelligence with the MBUX system. It offers smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and hard disk navigation. The 12.3-inch OLED display for the front passenger offers a personal display and control area.

Advanced features include a Head-up display, Biometric authentication, Over-the-air software updates, MBUX high-end rear entertainment with 11.6-inch displays, and a 7-inch MBUX rear tablet. A fully functional glass sunroof featuring a front panel that can either tilt up for ventilation or slide over the rear panel offers stunning skyward views. Mercedes Me Connect is the on-board connect tech.

Engine and Transmission

Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS Battery Capacity

The Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS comes with a 107.8 kWh Lithium-ion battery.  The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+  offers a power of 648.99 bhp and torque of 950 Nm. It increases to 750.59 bhp and 1020 Nm with the dynamic pack. The EQS 580 4MATIC offers a power of 750.97 bhp 855 Nm.

With a charging capacity of 11 kW, the EQS can be charged from 10% to 100% within 6.25 hours. A 200 kW DC-fast charger can charge from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes.

The EQS comes with a 1-speed automatic transmission.

The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ can reach a top speed of 250 km/h and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. The EQS 580 4MATIC can reach a top speed of 210 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. 

The front and rear axles' permanently excited synchronous machines (PSM) provide powerful acceleration by converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. DYNAMIC SELECT allows Drivers to choose between the ECO, COMFORT, SPORT, and INDIVIDUAL drive programs.

The EQS 53 4MATIC+ offers a range of 526-580 km on a full charge. The EQS 580 4MATIC offers a range of 586- 693 km, and the ARAI MIDC range is 857 km. The WLTP Range is up to 857 km.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS has a ground clearance of 110 mm. It can handle minor potholes and speed bumps. However, off-road excursions on uneven, rough terrain can cause understrapping.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS has an extensive boot space of 610 litres. It is quite large and offers ample space for carrying daily necessities and luggage for on-road vacations. However, there is no front boot storage space.

Safety 

The Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS offers several high-end safety features and a 5-star NCAP safety rating. It has nine airbags and Adaptive Highbeam Assist, an intelligent system that uses highly precise LEDs to spare oncoming traffic or vehicles in front. Numerous driver assistance systems support safe driving.

Thanks to Active Steering Assist, drivers can experience noticeable comfort behind the wheel. Active Lane Keeping Assist assists drivers in returning to their lane by steering intervention if they inadvertently stray from it or approach other drivers too closely. In addition to helping drivers locate parking spots, Active Parking Assist with Parktronic also assists them in reversing into one.

Other features include the Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC and 360° camera that finds marked and free parking spots, a tyre pressure monitoring system, an Acoustic Vehicle Alert System, and a Pedestrian protection system controlled by intelligent sensors. 

The PRE-SAFE system works by utilising the moments before an accident occurs. By reducing accident noise, the PRESAFE Sound innovation shields the inner ear by producing noise from the speakers that can set off a body's natural defence mechanism.
