About Isuzu

The story of the carmaker Isuzu started back in Japan in 1916 when the brand was a major contributor to the automobile culture in Japan. Now, that brand stands tall with more than a century of experience, mostly making commercial vehicles. However, currently, it is not far behind in creating advanced passenger vehicles with the same ruggedness that will give you the confidence to take over almost any terrain. 

Most people don't know this, but Isuzu is the company that produced the first passenger car in 1922, which was called the A9. The brand soon went on to create the first truck for the country in 1924 and called it the CP. Isuzu was also the brand that created the first air-cooled diesel engines, the DA4 and DA6, in 1936. 

However, the catch here is that all this time, the name Isuzu was not in use whatsoever. It was not until 1934 that you could see the Isuzu logo on its BX buses and TX trucks. Finally, the company decided to adopt the name Isuzu in 1949, and the company now has widespread operations in about 120 countries around the world. 

Isuzu finally found its way to India in 2006, entering the market as the technical partner of the commercial vehicle manufacturer Swaraj Mazda. Currently, Isuzu owns this very company, and in India, you might know it by the name SML Isuzu Limited. Besides that, the brand is also in partnership with Sumitomo Corporation.              

Notable Isuzu Cars 

Isuzu was the first automaker in Japan to create the first passenger vehicle in the country. However, the brand has come a long way since then, offering the world a wide range of cars, trucks and even buses. One of those vehicles was the Isuzu Gemini, which was a result of Isuzu's collaboration with General Motors. 

This also marked a significant increase in Isuzu exports from Japan, and even GM cars in the US were now using Isuzu engines. In 1979, the brand launched the Isuzu Piazza, which markered its re-entry into the sedan segment passenger cars. But this was a short-lived joy for the carmaker as they had to focus their efforts back on the launch of the Isuzu Giga in 1994. 

With the turn of the century, Isuzu took things up a notch, launching the 1st Gen Isuzu D-Max. The D-Max was not just practical but also came with stunning looks paired with many great features. This car is one of the most successful offerings from the brand, and it did an excellent job of adding more goodwill to the brand's name.  

Isuzu then launched the Isuzu Elf truck in 2006 and the Isuzu Forward in 2007, which were both great successes in their segment. In 2011, the brand finally came up with the second generation of the Isuzu D-Max, and things were quite great with this vehicle. This time, the D-max came with a larger cabin and more updated headlamps, front grille, and more. 

In 2013, Isuzu launched the MU-7 SUV in India, but the car did not seem to strike the right chord with the Indian audience. Besides that, the competition for the Indian SUV was at its peak, with companies like Mahindra and Tata offering far better alternatives. The brand then went on to release the Isuzu D-Max Space Cab in India in 2014. 

However, it was not till 2016 when the launch of the Isuzu D-Max was launched in India, and the brand did not seem to touch the right notes this time. This was followed by the launch of the Isuzu mu-X in 2017, which still remains a huge hit in the country. Then came 2018, when the brand launched the Isuzu V-Cross, which was a vehicle from a different breed compared to what the brand offers.

We got a more upgraded version of the Isuzu V-cross in 2019, and this vehicle was an instant hit. This adventure utility vehicle was truly unique and came with dexterous looks that demanded attention on the road. Then came the Isuzu D-Max Super Strong, which was launched in 2020 and was designed for the commercial sector.     

In 2021, the brand finally launched the Isuzu Hi-Lander, and this vehicle did earn some fanfare among the Indian audience. This was followed by the launch of the Isuzu S-Cab and S-Cab Z in 2023, and both of these vehicles became quick hits. These luxury utility vehicles were something new in the Indian market, but they worked quite well.

Isuzu Market Share 

Considering that Isuzu only made its entry into the Indian market in 2006, the carmaker has not been able to make that big of a dent in the industry. This comes as no surprise as by this time, many foreign carmakers were flooding the Indian markets after the liberalisation in 1990. However, it is worth mentioning that Isuzu has come a long way in India, and given enough.

time, the brand will become a major player here as well. 

For instance, recent reports show that Isuzu has increased its net profit by 45.93%. Currently, the company has a net profit of Rs. 46.39 crore on an 18.13% increase in sales to Rs. 746.10 crore in the first quarter of FY25 over the profits of the first quarter of FY24. This is a sign of growth and something worth taking note of. 

However, one must not assume that all is well with SML Isuzu since the carmaker has reported an 8% decline in YoY sales in October 2024. While the brand sold 873 units in October last year, it only managed to sell 801 units in October 2024. This has led to a de-growth of 8.2% for Isuzu.                    

In terms of cargo vehicles, Isuzu sold 394 units in October 2024, while it sold 411 units in the same month last year. This marks a decline in the sale of Isuzu commercial vehicles by 4.1%. The same goes for passenger vehicles, where Isuzu had sold just 407 units in October 2024. 

If you take the count from April to October 2024, Isuzu has a total sale of 8,428 units. However, the good news is that this is an increase from the sale of 8001 units from the same period last year. This marks a YoY growth of 5.3% for the carmaker in India.
