Affected units of the Cybertruck are facing an issue where the EV stops producing any torque.
Tesla has recalled the Cybertruck once again, this time for a possible fault in the drive inverter which could lead to the Cybertruck not producing any torque. This fault affects 2,431 Cybertruck units, as per a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
This problem affects those units of the Cybertruck that were produced between November 6, 2023 and July 30, 2024, which have metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET) in the drive inverters. The issue can happen without a warning when the accelerator pedal fails to propel the vehicle but an alert will appear on the display, informing and instructing the driver to pull over safely.
The NHTSA report says, “No warning occurs prior to the loss of propulsion. However, when the driver loses the ability to apply torque, they will immediately receive a visual alert on the user interface, with an instruction to safely pull over the vehicle to the side of the road.” The issue was first brought to light on August 5 when a customer complained of a sudden loss of propulsion that occurred a few days prior. Tesla then conducted a field research to analyse the potential issue and concluded that it was indeed the MOSFET in the drive inverter.
Tesla will replace the affected drive inverter free of charge with a properly functioning MOSFET. It will send out notifications to the owners regarding the issue. The NHTSA report states Tesla is unaware of any collisions, fatalities or injuries that may have happened because of this issue.
