MotoGP returns to India after a one-year hiatus.

In a landmark development for motorsport enthusiasts in India, MotoGP has announced a new agreement with Invest UP, the Government of Uttar Pradesh's investment promotion agency. This contract guarantees that the Bharat GP will remain on the MotoGP calendar from 2025 to 2027, with the event continuing to be held at the Buddh International Circuit, which made its debut on the MotoGP circuit in 2023.

This renewed contract also marks the return of this top-class sport after a one-year hiatus for the 2024 Bharat GP, which was cancelled due to “operational constraints" and the extreme heat experienced during that time. However, behind the scenes, the cancellation also stemmed from unresolved financial issues with Dorna Sports—the commercial rights holder for MotoGP—and a shortfall in the necessary funding from the government.

Addressing these concerns, the new agreement promises to bring a revitalised focus to the event. Manoj Kumar Singh, Chief Secretary and Infrastructure & Industrial Development Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, emphasised the deal's significance. "Bringing MotoGP to Uttar Pradesh elevates our state on the global sports stage and catalyses substantial economic growth across tourism, hospitality, and associated sectors. This event will magnetise visitors worldwide, spotlighting Uttar Pradesh's prowess in hosting world-class sporting extravaganzas."

We had earlier done a story where we discussed how the financial framework for the 2025 event will involve a substantial investment of ₹150 crore. Uttar Pradesh will cover 53% of this cost—approximately ₹80 crore—through Invest UP, while the remainder will be sourced from sponsorships. This investment is a marked increase from the ₹18.5 crore contributed by Invest UP for the 2023 race. The new deal includes advertising rights across multiple MotoGP events globally, aimed at promoting Uttar Pradesh as a critical investment and tourism destination.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement. "We're delighted to announce this new agreement made directly with the government of Uttar Pradesh. The inaugural Indian Grand Prix was a key success and brought enormous value to both MotoGP and our host region of UP. It's fantastic that we can continue building on that success into the future," he added.

The new agreement also brings a fresh perspective on event promotion and organisation. A global tender will be issued for a new promoter by September 2024, following criticisms faced by Fairstreet Sports, the previous promoter, regarding organisational issues and payment delays. A special organising committee, including representatives from Invest UP, local administration, Dorna Sports, and noted investors, will oversee the event to ensure its smoother operation.

The return of MotoGP to India is not just a win for fans but a strategic move for the sport's expansion in a key market. With the renewed focus on Uttar Pradesh and the commitment from Dorna Sports, the Bharat GP is set to become a highlight of the MotoGP calendar, offering thrilling racing action and boosting India's status in the global motorsport arena.
