In a bid to expand Delhi's public transport fleet, the state government on Monday announced it will introduce 6,000-7,000 electric buses in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026.
"I think Delhi needs 7,000-8,000 more electric buses and we will achieve this by February 2026," Delhi Transport Minister, Pankaj Kumar Singh, told reporters in New Delhi during the India Clean Transportation Summit (ICTS) 2025.
The announcement was in the presence of leaders from Delhi and Oslo who came together for a partnership on urban e-mobility solutions.
The minister added that by 2030 the national capital will become the ideal city for EVs or EV capital and strong charging infrastructure will drive the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
“Jab dost ek dusre ki madad karenge tabhi dosti banegi. Dosti means
friendship (when a friend (OSLO) helps another friend (Delhi), that’s when friendship flourishes)," Singh noted.
DOSTI also stands for Delhi-Oslo Smart Transport Initiative.
“When cities cooperate, a lot happens. There is a lot to learn from Delhi (for Oslo) and we can have a successful co-learning collaboration," said Audun Garberg, Vice Director and Head of the Climate Department, while highlighting Oslo’s success story and the potential of Delhi’s transition to zero-emission vehicles.
Under the partnership, the cities intend to learn from each other decarbonisation strategies beyond road transport, such as zero-emission construction machinery.
In 2024, 85 per cent of municipal construction projects in Oslo were carried out using zero-emission machinery, driven by the 100 per cent zero-emission municipal construction target in 2025.
