Suzuki Motor Corporation today announced that it has sold 80 million units worldwide by the end of August 2023. The breakdown of the sales units are 28.9 million units in Japan and 51.27 million units overseas. The breakdown of the areas are Japan 36%, India 32.6%, Europe 10%, Asia 13.5%, and Others (Latin America, Oceania, Middle East, Africa, etc.) 7.8%. India is the second largest market for the country and in India, it has held the highest market share in the four-wheeler industry.
Suzuki crossed the 10 million milestone in 1989, 50 million in 2013 and it’s taken just 10 more years post that to cross the 80 million mark. Suzuki’s top three best-sellers include the Alto, Wagon R and the Swift series. Jimny comes in at 7th position. However, while these are the youngest of stars, it's the old guard that put Suzuki on the map.
Suzuki first launched the Suzulight in 1955 and 10 years later it entered the compact vehicle space with the Fronte 800. The Suzulight was exported from Japan in 1959 and Suzuki’s first overseas automobile production began in Pakistan in 1975. The company expanded its overseas bases adding India (1983) and Hungary (1982).
Of course, the Indian plant has become a production hub for Suzuki Motor Corporation, from where it now exports to the world. Suzuki now has 15 automobile production bases in 10 countries including Japan.
The Suzulight, Forte800 and the Alto have been the preferred choice for most buyers in India. Over the past 44 years since its launch, Alto has been favoured by customers and has become one of the models that represent Japanese mini vehicles. Starting as a Japanese mini vehicle, Alto has expanded worldwide, especially in India where it has largely contributed to Suzuki’s sales in the country.
