ACKO Drive Awards 2026: The 2026 Entry Performance Car TOTM Goes to the Volkswagen Golf GTi

Why should crorepatis have all the fun? Our 2026 Entry Performance Car category recognises a segment that would otherwise be overshadowed by far more expensive models. Our nominees were the MINI JCW Countryman, Skoda Octavia RS, and VW Golf GTI, all of which are aspirational but within reach of a much larger potential buyer pool.

All three of these cars are zippy and fun to drive, and none of them would be completely out of place when multitasking as a family car. However, it was the VW Golf GTI that took the TOTM in this category as an all-rounder. This hot hatchback has a 2.0-litre TSI engine capable of 261 bhp and 370 Nm of peak torque, paired with a 7-speed DSG transmission. 

Ride quality is good overall, exterior styling is sharp, and the cabin has quite a few modern conveniences. You get seven airbags, 20 ADAS features, and a five-star Euro NCAP rating. 

It’s no surprise that all 150 units in the first batch imported here were booked pretty much immediately. We hope even more people can get their hands on this TOTM winner for some driving fun!
