The Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles partnership has unveiled its first-ever product, the all-new Triumph Speed 400, Scrambler 400X, ahead of its India launch on July 5, 2023. The two new modern classics from the Triumph stable will be built at Bajaj Auto's Chakan plant in Pune, Maharashtra. Both the upcoming Triumph Speed 400, and Triumph Scrambler 400X take design inspiration from the Speed Twin 900 and Scrambler 900, respectively, and have been built on a completely new platform. Both the new motorcycles will enter the 400 cc segment and compete with the likes of BMW G 310 R, KTM Duke 390, Bajaj Dominar 400 as well as the upcoming Harley Davidson X440.

Design

Conceived and designed in Hinckley, UK, the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X join the company’s modern classic line-up with signature sculpted fuel tanks and classic engine profiles. Both feature traditional touches like the distinctive finned cylinder head and exhaust header clamps with contemporary details like the upswept silencer, bold graphics along with concealed liquid-cooling and a flowing exhaust run with a hidden primary silencer. Moreover, both motorcycles receive a high-quality finish with trademark black powder-coated engine casings, tough gold anodised forks, paint, and logo detailing.

Triumph

Colours

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X gets protection for the headlight, radiator and sump, as well as handguards, a handlebar brace with pad and a longer front mudguard. In terms of colour options, the Triumph Speed 400 receives two-tone paint schemes, each featuring a prominent Triumph tank graphic in Carnival Red, Caspian Blue, or Phantom Black. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X on the other hand, gets a distinctive ‘Scrambler’ tank stripe and triangle badge, with Matt Khaki Green and Fusion White, Carnival Red and Phantom Black, plus Phantom Black and Silver Ice options.

Engine

At the heart of the two, new Triumph's, is an all-new fuel-injected and liquid-cooled 398 cc single-cylinder engine that develops 38 bhp @ 8000 rpm and 37.5 Nm @ 6500 rpm, coupled to a 6-speed gearbox. According to Triumph, the new engine receives concealed liquid-cooling and machined cooling fins with black powder-coated engine casings that offer a characterful, compelling and responsive power delivery with an evocative, rich and distinctive exhaust note.

Triumph

Weight

With ergonomics designed for optimum comfort and control, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X benefit from a slim waistline, which combines with an accessible seat height of 790 mm and 835 mm, respectively, and a low weight of 170 kg / 179 kg. Both models benefit from their own model-specific chassis set-up, with a new frame, bolt-on rear subframe, and cast-aluminium swingarm paired with suspension set-ups tailored to each use case.

Suspension

The Triumph Speed 400 features large 43 mm big-piston upside-down front forks, a mono-shock rear suspension unit with an external reservoir, lightweight 17-inch wheels, and roadster-specific geometry and wheelbase. Then there are also powerful four-piston radial front brakes with a 300 mm front disc and braided lines to give a responsive brake feel.

Triumph

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X on the other hand, features a longer wheelbase, longer travel suspension, a larger 19-inch front wheel and wide handlebars to give a more upright and commanding riding position. A larger cast steel brake pedal and high-grip foot pegs that are positioned lower and wider also make for a more natural standing riding position when riding off-road, while a larger 320 mm front brake disc delivers progressive braking performance.

Features

Both the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X share some of the latest rider-focused technology as well, such as Ride-By-Wire throttle, Traction control, ABS, new dual format instruments with integrated LCD screens, a USB-C charging socket, and a Torque-assist clutch to reduce fatigue during stop/start riding. Triumph also says that both of these motorcycles are built from tubular steel on a hybrid spine/perimeter frame with a bolt-on rear subframe.

Triumph

Tyres

Apart from a twin-sided, cast aluminium alloy, both the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X ride on different sets of wheels for various purposes. The Triumph Speed 400 wears Metzeler Sportec M9RR tyres, shod with 110/70 R17 at the front and 150/60 R17 at the rear, while the Triumph Scrambler 400 X rides on Metzeler Karoo Street tyres with 100/90 R19 at the front and 140/80 R17 at the rear.

Dimension

While both motorcycles are built on the same platform, it varies in the kind of real estate it occupies. So the Triumph Speed 400 is 2056 mm long, 795 mm wide and 1075 mm tall while the Scrambler 400 X measures 2117 mm in length, 825 mm in width, and 1190 mm in height.
