Claude 3 Opus has usurped GPT-4 on the Chatbot Arena leaderboard
Anthropic's Claude 3 Opus has surpassed OpenAI's GPT-4 as the world's most efficient AI foundational model, according to the popular crowdsourced leaderboard ChatBot Arena. The leaderboard, which is widely used by AI researchers, has consistently placed GPT-4 and its variations at the top since its inclusion on May 10, 2023. However, Claude 3 Opus, launched just a month ago, has now claimed the top spot.
The news has been making waves on social media, with software developer Nick Dobos tweeting, "The king is dead. RIP GPT-4," in a post comparing GPT-4 Turbo and Claude 3 Opus. The tweet has garnered significant attention from the AI community.
ChatBot Arena, operated by the Large Model Systems Organisation (LMSYS ORG), a research collaboration between students and faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, UC San Diego, and Carnegie Mellon University, ranks AI models based on their performance. According to the leaderboard, Claude 3 Opus holds the number one position, followed by GPT-4 1106 preview and GPT-4 0125 preview. Google's Gemini Pro and Claude 3 Sonnet round out the top five.
Interestingly, Anthropic's smaller model, Claude 3 Haiku, has also been gaining attention for its performance, securing the sixth spot on the leaderboard. Other notable models on the list include Mistral Large and Medium, as well as the original Claude 1 model.
This development coincides with Amazon's planned release of the second tranche of its $2.75 billion investment in Anthropic, further solidifying the company's position in the AI industry.
As the AI landscape continues to evolve rapidly, the rise of Claude 3 Opus and the ongoing competition among AI foundational models are likely to have significant implications for the future of artificial intelligence and its applications across various domains.
