Ming-Chi Kuo posits that the iPhone 15 lineup is poised to embrace an invigorated ultra-wideband chip
Ming-Chi Kuo, a luminary in the sphere of Apple prognostications, has in his most recent dispatch to investors, offered insights into what one might anticipate in the forthcoming iPhone. Mr Kuo posits that the iPhone 15 lineup is poised to embrace an invigorated ultra-wideband chip, aimed at bolstering the synergy with the Vision Pro headset, which was given its initial public showcasing by Apple earlier this month.
Apple's introduction of the ultra-wideband chip can be traced back to the iPhone 11, featuring the inaugural U1 chip. This was fabricated utilising TSMC's 16nm process. However, the new iteration is rumoured to be predicated on a more compact 7nm process, thereby rendering it both more potent and energy-efficient. This progression appears logical, given that the application processor within the iPhone 14 Pro - the A16 Bionic - is constructed on a 5nm process. Further, whispers abound that the iPhone 15 models could herald a transition to a 3nm process.
The present-generation U1 chip has found a home in an array of devices, including the HomePod Mini, HomePod 2023, AirTags, and has been a staple in all Apple Watch models since the Series 6. The U1 chip furnishes users with the ability to swiftly pinpoint the location of a device using the 'Find My' application, and facilitates functionalities such as Hand-Off, Precision Finding, and AirDrop.
In a future-gazing aside, Kuo also ventures that the iPhone 16 models, slated for a 2024 debut, are poised to leapfrog to Wi-Fi 7, a development likely influenced by the Apple Vision Pro headset’s incorporation of the same technology. Wi-Fi 7 is touted by the Wi-Fi Alliance as enabling imperceptible levels of latency and lifelike responsiveness, particularly in the realms of virtual and augmented reality.
Ming-Chi Kuo was among the first analysts to believe that Apple would be announcing its first augmented reality headset at WWDC earlier this month.
