Apple has announced it is extending free access to its life-saving Emergency SOS via satellite feature for another year for existing iPhone 14 users.
Introduced last November, Emergency SOS via satellite allows iPhone users to message emergency services for help even outside of cellular or WiFi coverage via satellite communication in space. This breakthrough technology has already helped save numerous lives since its debut.
In a press release, Apple confirmed extending the initial two-year free trial of Emergency SOS via satellite for iPhone 14 owners who activated their devices before November 15th, 2023, in supported countries. It enables iPhone 14 users to retain access to the critical safety feature without charge for an additional year.
Emergency SOS via satellite is currently available for iPhone 14 and 15 models in 16 countries, including the United States, Canada, France, Germany and the UK. The service connects users directly to emergency responders via text when conventional cellular networks are unavailable.
Building on its satellite infrastructure, Apple has also introduced Roadside Assistance via satellite and expanded location-sharing over satellite through the Find My app. These safety tools provide assistance to iPhone users travelling beyond cell coverage.
Apple's ongoing efforts to advance satellite connectivity in its devices could help save more lives in dire emergencies in remote areas without traditional network access. The extended availability of Emergency SOS will benefit iPhone 14 owners who continue relying on this service while off the grid.
