Apple is doubling down on Car Key tests with an app as it feels that not many manufacturers have adopted the technology. Car Key debuted in 2020 as a way to unlock the car using the Wallet app on the iPhone. So far, it has seen minimal adaption and has only been seen on specific BMW models in limited markets.

Now, there is a Car Keys tests app on the App Store which can only be accessed by users who have an Apple developer account. This app is meant for automakers to test and validate requirements for the certification process of adopting Car Key through its made-for-iPhone program.

“For use by MFi Licensees only. Use the Car Keys Tests app to test and validate connection, performance, and other key requirements for the certification process of the vehicles you develop that incorporate Apple digital car keys technology. For more information about Car Keys certification, visit the MFi Portal at mfi.apple.com," said Apple on the App Store.

It is highly possible the very same app was being provided to automakers privately but since the ramp-up has been slow Apple is now surfacing the app for every developer. So far only BMW, Hyundai and its sister brand Kia have leveraged this technology.

Car Key works via NFC and can not only unlock the car but also start the car and share car keys with other people.
