The launch marks a transition away from reliance on the iTunes app.
Apple has officially released standalone apps for Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices on Windows platforms. Initially Previewed last year, the apps are now out of beta and available for download.
The launch marks a transition away from reliance on the iTunes app, which previously bundled music, video, and device management functionalities. Now, Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices offer dedicated experiences on Windows 10 and 11 systems.
According to an Apple support page, Apple Music lets Windows users access their music library, purchase, and use the streaming service. Apple TV enables viewing of movies, shows, and Apple TV+ content. Apple Devices helps with iPhone and iPad backups, restores, and management.
The apps join the existing iCloud offering for Windows. Together, the suite of Apple apps aims to provide full experiences on Windows that mirror what's available on Mac machines after the discontinuation of the iTunes app.
For now, iTunes will remain available for Windows users to access podcasts, audiobooks, and legacy content. Apple recommends keeping iTunes installed even when using the new apps, since they rely on iTunes libraries for media.
The launch comes after extended beta testing periods for each app throughout 2022. It also follows growing Apple-Microsoft partnerships, like iCloud integration in the Windows 11 Photos app.
Windows users need an Apple ID and an Apple device linked to their account to use the new Apple apps. Downloading one of the apps will prompt the installation of all three to ensure a complete experience.
