Apple has recently introduced its latest music streaming app, Apple Music Classical. The app is free of charge to all existing Apple Music subscribers, except for those residing in China, Japan, Korea, Russia, Taiwan, and Turkey. Fortunately, the app is available in India. Apple launched a separate app for classical music as it has a belief that the audience for such music browses through music is a different manner than users of the standard Apple Music app.
According to Apple, the app currently offers more than 5 million tracks, with a focus on Western classical music. Additionally, the app also offers Hindustani classical music and Carnatic titles.
The app is based on the technology of Primephonic, a company that Apple acquired last year. In addition to the music tracks, the app also includes exclusive albums, composer bios, and editorial content.
The app's interface is organized by composers, rather than song names. Users can browse tracks using filters such as composers, genres, conductors, orchestras, ensembles, and choirs under the catalogue tab. The app also offers a curated playlist tab and a dedicated tab for music instrumentation. Users can also add music from their personal libraries and download tracks via Apple Music, although there is no shuffle mode.
All tracks are available in 192kHz/24-bit Hi-Res Lossless audio, and in spatial audio with Dolby Atmos. Spatial audio is supported by Apple's AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Max, AirPods 3rd generation, and Beats Fit Pro.
The app is currently available only for iPhone, with no iPad or macOS app. To use the app, an iPhone with a minimum iOS 15.4 or newer must be installed.
