Apple has generally provided around five years of support unofficially for its iPhones in the past.
For the first time, Apple has publicly committed to a minimum support period for iOS updates on its latest iPhone line. In a compliance document released in the UK, Apple has promised five years of software support for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, as mandated by the new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulation.
As reported by Mishaal Rahman for Android Authority, the "defined support period" listed in Apple's statement refers to September 2023, when the iPhone 15 series launched, through September 2028. This means that the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and expectedly, the rest of the iPhone 15 family, will receive iOS updates and security patches until at least five years after their initial release date.
Apple has generally provided around five years of support unofficially for its iPhones in the past. However, public commitment marks a change in the company's strategy, which has not specified a timeframe until now.
Google and Samsung notably extended software update guarantees for their smartphones to seven years. As the Android world adopts longer lifecycles, Apple may feel pressure to clarify its own standards to remain competitive. While Apple emphasized five years as a minimum, it leaves open the possibility of extending support even further. Either way, iPhone 15 owners can rest assured of regular iOS features and security updates through fall 2028.
