According to industry insiders, Apple is poised to introduce new iPad models this week through a subdued press release, forgoing the traditional fanfare of a keynote address. Notably, seasoned Apple analyst Mark Gurman disputes the timeline, arguing that the launch will not occur this week. However, a separate report by Supercharged and 9to5Mac posits the contrary, suggesting that new iPads are indeed slated for an imminent release.
Sources indicate that the iPad Air, last updated in 2022, is set to feature the new M2 processor. This chip has previously been incorporated into the iPad Pro and the MacBook Air, marking a significant performance upgrade for the iPad Air lineup. Meanwhile, the iPad Mini, last revamped in 2021, is expected to be powered by the A16 Bionic chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 15 series. Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on an updated entry-level iPad model.
While Gurman acknowledges that these updates are in the pipeline, he maintains that they will not see the light of day until after October. On another note, he anticipates a comprehensive redesign of the iPad Pro, complete with a new M3 chipset, to be unveiled next year.
In terms of peripherals, rumours are swirling that Apple may launch a third-generation Apple Pencil, featuring a replaceable magnetic tip. The current second-generation Apple Pencil, which debuted alongside the 2018 iPad Pro redesign, is now five years old and has been subsequently adapted for the iPad Mini and iPad Air.
The ageing first-generation Apple Pencil, almost eight years old and still available for purchase, utilises a Lightning cable for charging. Given the industry's move towards USB Type-C, it wouldn't be surprising to see Apple update this older model accordingly.
If these developments come to fruition, they could very well mark Apple's final product announcements for the year. Meanwhile, Apple is currently hosting a Diwali sale, offering discounts on its latest products, adding a festive touch to its marketing strategy.
