Apple has already discontinued the iPhone 12 in various global markets.
French regulators have compelled Apple to release a software update specifically for iPhone 12 users in the country, citing concerns over radiation exposure limits. This regulatory action comes as Apple has already discontinued the iPhone 12 in various global markets.
In a statement to Reuters, Apple said, "We will issue a software update for users in France to accommodate the protocol used by French regulators." The company expressed its anticipation for the iPhone 12 to continue its availability in France.
Earlier in the week, French authorities had imposed a ban on the iPhone 12 for exceeding the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), a standard measure for the amount of radiation absorbed by the human body from electronic devices.
While Apple has refuted these claims, stating that the device has been tested and approved by global regulatory bodies, the incident has caught the attention of other European countries. Regulatory agencies in Belgium, Germany, and Italy are now also investigating the matter.
Interestingly, the French regulatory action coincided with the launch of Apple's iPhone 15, which led to the discontinuation of the iPhone 12 in several countries, including India. Apple has advised its tech support teams to remain discreet about the issue, should they be questioned by customers.
In summary, as Apple faces increased scrutiny over the iPhone 12's radiation levels in France and potentially other European countries, the tech giant has been quick to respond with a targeted software update. This development adds another layer of complexity to Apple's global product strategy, just as it launches its latest iPhone model.
