Apple will review each app downloaded through sideloading and impose fees on developers.

In response to the new Digital Markets Act (DMA) enforced by the European Union, Apple has announced plans to allow iPhone users in Europe to download apps directly from third-party sources outside of the App Store. However, the Cupertino giant will maintain control over this process by introducing new fees and restrictions.

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple will review each app downloaded through sideloading and impose fees on developers offering this option. The fees and tight controls signal Apple's reluctance to loosen its grip over the app distribution process.

The DMA specifically targets Apple's dominance in controlling app downloads through the closed App Store ecosystem. It aims to curb the market power of big tech companies and make it easier for users to switch between competing services. All companies, including Apple, must comply with the DMA's rules by March 7th.

The changes come amid ongoing regulatory scrutiny and antitrust battles facing Apple's control over third-party apps. The new fees and restrictions being planned could renew tensions with app developers who want more freedom from Apple's policies and high commissions. How Apple finalizes its plans in response to the DMA will shape the future of app delivery on iPhones, at least in Europe.
