Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has projected continued strong momentum in compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle sales, forecasting over 7 lakh units to be sold in financial year 2025–26 (FY26). This marks a projected 12.9 per cent growth over the 6.2 lakh CNG units sold in FY25.

Speaking on the company’s outlook, MSIL Chairman R.C. Bhargava stated, “Our CNG car sales in India reached over 6 lakh last year, and this year we’re expecting to cross 7 lakh.” The chairman highlighted that strong consumer demand, coupled with affordability and lower running costs, will remain key growth drivers for the segment.

CNG vehicles accounted for 34 per cent of Maruti Suzuki’s overall sales in FY25, further cementing its dominant position in the fuel category. The company offers one of the widest portfolios of CNG-powered vehicles, ranging from entry-level hatchbacks like the Alto K10 and Wagon R to larger models such as the Ertiga and XL6. However, the company recently delisted the Grand Vitara from its CNG guise.

The broader Indian passenger vehicle market has also witnessed a surge in demand for CNG-powered options. In FY25, CNG car sales across all automakers in India reached 787,724 units, signaling a steady shift in consumer preference toward cleaner and more economical fuel alternatives.

Tata Motors, a key challenger in the segment, posted an impressive 50 per cent year-on-year increase in CNG vehicle sales, registering 139,218 units. The penetration of CNG models in Tata’s overall sales portfolio rose to 25 per cent, indicating a strategic shift towards expanding alternative fuel offerings.

Hyundai Motor India also reported a rise in CNG adoption, with the fuel type accounting for 13.2 per cent of its domestic sales in FY25, up from 11.4 per cent in the previous fiscal. The South Korean automaker currently offers CNG variants in models such as the Grand i10 Nios, Aura, and the recently launched Exter.
