Ashok Leyland has been awarded a contract to deliver 1,937 buses to Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings (TNSTU), in a major boost to the commercial vehicle maker's footprint in the state's public transit infrastructure. The contract covers multiple bus variants tailored for diverse operational needs, spanning urban town services, inter-city mofussil operations and extended-route SETC services.
Each bus will feature iGen6 BS VI powertrain technology and be constructed on AIS 153-compliant chassis frameworks to satisfy prevailing Indian safety and operational regulations.
This procurement augments Ashok Leyland's current deployment of more than 21,000 buses already serving TNSTU operations. The manufacturer, which operates under the Hinduja Group umbrella, maintains its position as the world's fourth-largest bus producer and commands the leading market share in India's bus manufacturing industry.
The vehicles will be outfitted with upgraded battery and alternator assemblies engineered to power Intelligent Transport Management Systems (ITMS), while urban models will maintain a 650mm floor elevation to enable convenient passenger access and egress.
Company representatives indicate that the incoming buses will incorporate multiple technological enhancements. High-speed mofussil and SETC configurations will feature Electronic Stability Control mechanisms, while city-oriented low-entry and semi-low floor models will be equipped with automatic gearbox systems and air suspension technology. Universal wheelchair accessibility ramps will be standard across all units to ensure inclusive transportation for passengers with physical disabilities.
“We are proud to strengthen our long-standing partnership with the Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings through this significant order. Tamil Nadu has always been an important market for us, and this order is a testament to the trust and confidence our customers place in Ashok Leyland’s technology and performance. This order win reinforces our dedication to creating efficient and technologically advanced products that exceed our customers' expectations and contribute to the growth of public transportation," Madhavi Deshmukh, National Sales Head– MHCV, Ashok Leyland, said in a statement.
“We are thrilled to have received this order from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings for 1937 buses. Tamil Nadu has always been one of our most valued markets, and we take great pride in being a key partner in strengthening the state’s public transport system. These advanced buses, equipped with the latest safety, technology, and comfort features, underscore our commitment to delivering reliable, efficient, and safe mobility solutions," said Mohan K, Head Bus - MHCV, Ashok Leyland.
