Asus says this is not a true successor and decided not to call it the ROG Ally 2.
Asus has formally unveiled the ROG Ally X, its second-generation handheld gaming PC, just a day before Computex 2024 kicks off. The much-leaked device is now official, and will be positioned above the existing ROG Ally model which will continue to be available. While Asus is quick to point out all the ways in which the new model has been redesigned, it also says this is not a true successor and decided not to call it the ROG Ally 2.
The new console is powered by the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU as last year’s model and still has a 7-inch full-HD 120Hz screen, but nearly everything else is different. Asus credits user and fan feedback for many of the changes it has made.
Starting with software, there’s a new version of the Armoury Crate launcher that is more customisable and allows users to share button mappings.
The biggest hardware change is that Asus has doubled the battery capacity to 80Wh. Despite that, the new ROG Ally X is not much heavier or thicker, at 678g and 36.9mm respectively. Asus managed to compensate by using smaller and more powerful fans with additional vents, as well as a totally redesigned chassis and motherboard.
The proprietary ROG XG Mobile port for external GPUs has been replaced with a second Type-C port which will be more flexible and still allow for high-speed connectivity. One port now supports USB4/Thunderbolt 4 speed while the other is USB 3.2 Gen2. Both allow for external displays and power delivery.
You can now get up to 1TB of SSD storage and Asus has used a standard M.2 2280 module for easy upgrades. RAM gets a bump in speed and capacity, to 24GB OF LPDDR5X-7500.
The joysticks are said to be more durable and the overall design is more ergonomic, still with balanced weight. Moreover the device should stay cooler while running games.
The ROG Ally X is priced at US$ 799 (approximately Rs. 66,650 before taxes) and will go on sale in July. Preorders are already live in some countries. India pricing and availability has not yet been confirmed.
