Post Trump's January inauguration, the deployment of reciprocal import duties has impacted European automotive manufacturers.
The Trump administration's escalating trade policies have prompted Audi to actively mull establishing its first US manufacturing facility, with industry sources indicating the German luxury automaker could invest up to $4.6 billion in the project.
Following US President Donald Trump's January inauguration, the deployment of reciprocal import duties has significantly impacted European automotive manufacturers. The luxury division of Volkswagen Group now faces mounting financial pressure from these trade measures, with German automakers collectively absorbing hundreds of millions in additional costs.
As per publication Spiegel, Audi's leadership is weighing multiple strategic options, with a dedicated US production facility emerging as the most comprehensive solution despite its big financial requirements.
Internal company assessments suggest the proposed manufacturing complex would require approximately €4 billion in capital investment. The automaker is prioritising locations across the southern US, leveraging the region's established automotive infrastructure and favourable business environment.
An Audi representative was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters that the company is "currently evaluating various scenarios" and expects to finalise its strategic direction before year-end, working closely with Volkswagen Group leadership.
While Audi currently maintains no US production capacity, its parent company operates significant American manufacturing assets. Volkswagen's Tennessee facility in Chattanooga continues expanding, while a second plant near Columbia, South Carolina, is under construction.
This existing infrastructure could provide logistical advantages for Audi's expanding US operations, enabling shared supply chains and manufacturing expertise.
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen are simultaneously engaging with US trade officials to secure preferential tariff arrangements. These negotiations use the German manufacturers' substantial American investments and export contributions as bargaining positions.
