The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released the sales figures for the Indian automobile industry for April 2023. According to the data, the overall passenger vehicle sales in April 2023 stood at 3,31,278 units as compared to 2,93,303 units in April 2022, clocking a growth of 12.95 per cent. The two-wheeler segment registered 13,38,588 units in April 2023, as compared to 11,62,582 units in the same period last year, recording a 15.14 per cent increase. The three-wheeler segment saw a rise in domestic sales, recording 42,885 units in April 2023 as compared to 20,997 units in April 2022, growing by 104.24 per cent.
Vinod Aggarwal, President, SIAM said, “All the segments, viz., passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers, have posted growth in April 2023, compared to April 2022, which clearly indicates that industry has been able to transit very smoothly to BS 6 Phase 2 Emission Norms from April 1, 2023. As we gradually get into the monsoon season, among other factors, good rainfall can also help the auto industry sustain its growth.”
As far as the overall domestic sales go for the month of April 2023, the industry clocked 16,65,805 units as compared to 14,35,321, a growth of 16.06 per cent, while the total sales for passenger vehicles (PVs) stood at 2,84,271 units in April 2023, as compared to 2,51,716 units in April 2022, a surplus of 12.93 per cent. The two-wheeler segment sold 13,38,588 units in April 2023, as compared to 11,62,582 units in April 2022, a rise of 15.14 per cent.
Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM said, “Sales of passenger vehicles in April 2023 have been the highest ever in April, returning a growth of 12.9% compared to April 2022. Two-wheelers also posted a growth of 15.1% in April 2023, compared to last year. Domestic sales of three-wheelers in April 2023 have reached nearer to the pre-covid levels for the month of April.”
In the passenger car space, the industry cumulatively sold 1,25,758 units in April 2023, as compared to 1,12,923 units in the same period last year, a nominal hike of 11.37 per cent, whereas the total SUVs sold in April 2023 stood at 1,48,005 units as compared to 1,27,282 units sold in April 2022, a change of 16.28 per cent.
In terms of the exports department, the overall units distributed from India stood at 3,22,476 units in April 2023, as compared to 4,87,783 in April 2022, a decline of 33.89 per cent. The total PVs exported in April 2023 were 40,899 units, while in April 2022, the number stood at 46,498, a decrease of 12.04 per cent.
