The Chennai-based manufacturer sold 7% fewer motorcycles in December 2023, compared to sales in December 2022.
Royal Enfield has released its sales figures for December 2023, and as per the retail figures, the manufacturer witnessed a 7% drop in overall Y-o-Y sales. The company sold a total of 63,387 motorcycles last month, compared to 68,400 units which were sold in the same month, last year.
In the domestic market alone, the brand recorded a decline of 4% in sales with just 57,291 units sold, compared to 59,821 sold last year at the same time. This was further made worse by the 29% decline in exports. Royal Enfield exported just 6,096 units in December 2023, compared to 8,579 units exported in the same month in 2022.
However, on the contrary, the brand recorded an overall growth in sales in Year-to-Date 2022-2023 with overall retail figures at 6,85,059, compared to 6,16,370 units in Year-to-Date 2021-2022.
In the domestic market, the Royal Enfield also recorded 16% growth with its Y-t-D figures with 6,30,273 units retailed in 2022-2023, compared to 5,42,818 units retailed in Y-t-D 2021-2022. However, 2022-2023 Y-t-D export figures were down by 26% with just 54,786 units exported in the period compared to 73,552 units the brand exported the year before.
The slow sales momentum can be attributed to the launch of the Himalayan and the Shotgun 650 being pushed into 2024. Hence, these two models should be able to help grow the brand’s positioning in the final quarter of the fiscal year. “We’ve had some spectacular motorcycle launches and the response from global experts and consumers have been nothing short of exceptional,” pointed out B Govindarajan, CEO, Royal Enfield.
