Despite Bajaj selling more bikes, TVS’ scooter business helps it earn the third spot
The Indian two-wheeler market roared into February 2024 with established players maintaining their lead. Established players like Hero and Honda continue to dominate, while TVS impresses with its diversified approach. Bajaj is adapting to market trends, and Suzuki's resurgence is much needed. Here’s how the top 5 are placed:
Brand Name | Bike Sales | Scooter Sales | Overall |
---|---|---|---|
Hero | 4,14,708 | 30,387 | 4,45,095 |
Honda | 1,84,184 | 2,29,783 | 4,13,967 |
TVS | 1,04,301 | 1,22,142 | 2,26,443 |
Bajaj | 1,55,107 | 13,620 | 1,68,727 |
Suzuki | 1,844 | 81,460 | 1,04,602 |
Hero MotoCorp continued its reign in the segment, holding onto a commanding market share of over 30 percent. The company achieved a remarkable feat with a 16.46 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth, selling a staggering 4,45,095 units compared to February 2023. Hero's recent launch of the Xtreme 125R and the upcoming arrival of the powerful Mavrick 440 in showrooms are sure to keep them at the forefront.
Honda recorded a phenomenal YoY growth of 82.31 percent, selling 4,13,967 units in February 2024. This significant jump highlights their strategic focus on expanding their premium motorcycle offerings through the Big Wing dealership network. We expect some new launches in the scooter market from them in the coming months with the electric Activa being one of the major launches from the Japanese brand in the next fiscal year.
TVS secured a strong third position with a YoY jump of nearly 21 percent with 2,26,443 units. Its motorcycle sales witnessed a surge of 46 percent, while scooters and EVs also saw healthy growth. This multifaceted approach positions TVS as a well-rounded contender in the Indian two-wheeler market.
Bajaj, though maintaining a respectable fourth position, experienced a mixed bag in February. Its recent update to the popular Pulsar NS range with new features demonstrates the brand’s commitment to keeping the Pulsar’s appeal fresh and relevant. The biggest update incoming includes the largest Pulsar ever, which is expected to be the NS 400 and you can read more about it here.
Suzuki, showcasing a remarkable comeback with a nearly 59 percent YoY growth. They sold 1,04,602 units in February 2024, indicating a renewed focus on capturing a larger market share. They are expected to grow more with promising products like the Suzuki Avenis which is expected to bring in volumes like the Suzuki Access and Burgman. However, the bike maker is struggling with its bike business, as it didn’t even manage to sell 2000 units of all of its Gixxers and V-Strom motorcycles. A major rethink is necessary for the brand to help this side of its business as well, so as to keep the Indian audiences hooked.
