Who's racing ahead, and who's just keeping up?
India's leading automakers delivered starkly different performances in July 2025, mapping the changing dynamics of a rapidly transforming automobile market. While Maruti Suzuki retained its volume leadership, the actual surprise was Mahindra's growth. Hyundai and Tata Motors, in turn, bet on their strengths with concerted investments in key segments, demonstrating how exports, electrification, and shifting consumer preferences are reshaping the competitive landscape. So who's racing ahead, and who's just keeping up?
- Total Sales: 1,80,526 units
- YoY Growth: +3.1%
- Domestic PV Sales: 1,37,776 units
- Exports: 31,745 units (+32.4% YoY)
Thanks largely to a record export performance, especially in the ASEAN, Latin American, and African markets, Maruti Suzuki maintained its leadership position in July. While its hatchbacks (Baleno, Swift, and WagonR) registered robust year-on-year growth of 12 per cent, the mass segment (Alto, S-Presso) registered a 31% YoY fall, reflecting a distinct change in consumer sentiment towards more sophisticated compact products.
Maruti’s SUV sales declined by 7 per cent year-on-year in July, as models like the Fronx, Grand Vitara, and Jimny struggled to maintain momentum amidst intensifying competition and a flurry of new launches from rival brands.
However, it was models like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire (20,895 units), Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (16,600 units), and Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (14,700 units), that largely contributed to the company’s overall growth trajectory, while making up the top 3 best-selling cars for the month.

The e Vitara EV, Escudo SUV and a three-row Grand Vitara are the three new offerings that can arrest this fall and benefit from rapidly changing markets.
- Total Sales: 83,691 units
- YoY Growth: +26%
-SUV Sales: 49,871 units (+20%)
-Exports: 2,774 units (+83%)
-3-Wheelers: 9,475 units (+164%)
-CV Sales: 21,571 units
Posting the highest YoY growth (26%) in the top four, Mahindra registered its best July. Demand was led by the launch of the XUV 3XO 'REVX' range of new models as well as advanced deliveries of the BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs. Mahindra managed to retain SUV leadership due to strong demand tailwind in flagship models such as the Scorpio-N, Thar, and XUV700.

What's noteworthy is that the three-wheeler segment grew by 164 per cent as a result of increasing use of electric variants and government-backed urban mobility plans. Though other sub-segments saw growth, CV performance was patchy with LCV <2T falling. The new-generation Bolero and Thar EV, two of Mahindra's future EV designs set to be launched on 15 August, would significantly increase the company's product offerings in the days to come.

- Total Sales: 60,073 units
- YoY Growth: +1.4%
- Domestic PV Sales: 50,701 units
- Exports: 9,372 units (+12.5%)
Hyundai remained in the top four even as it reported a pretty flat performance. The 12.5% YoY growth in exports is a testimony to Hyundai's strong production rigour and market access diversity, while Creta, Exter, and Venue continued to dominate volumes.

Hyundai also enjoys its considerable market presence in the small SUV segment, and in the coming months, it will utilise potential updates and technologically superior improvements to defend its ground from Mahindra and Maruti.

Tata Motors witnessed a 4 per cent decline in overall sales in July 2025, mainly due to a decline in its internal combustion engine (ICE) passenger vehicle business. But according to Tata, this decline was offset by an impressive performance in the electric vehicle (EV) business, where the company registered its highest-ever monthly EV sales, a 42 per cent year-on-year growth, cementing its position as India's EV market leader.

While it is still too early in the financial year to determine the company's top-selling vehicle, the Tata Punch remains the probable champion. In 2024, it was Tata's top-selling vehicle at 202,031 units, reflecting its mass popularity among urban and semi-urban segments.
The MH&ICVs and ILMCVs sales contributed to Tata's CV business rising by 7 per cent. Its exports recorded a considerable 57 per cent growth, and CVs registered growing demand overseas.
