Tata Motors has reported 69,131 units sold in July 2025, a 4 per cent decline year-on-year from July 2024's 71,996 units. This overall decline was driven by a double-digit fall in passenger vehicle (PV) volume, while commercial vehicles (CVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for some much-needed growth.

Passenger Car Sales Drop 11%, but EVs Hit an All-Time High

Tata Motors sold 40,175 passenger cars, including exports, in July 2025. This figure is 11 per cent lower than the 44,954 units sold in July 2024. Domestic PV sales declined to 39,521 units, 12 per cent lower year on year. This is the third consecutive month of subdued PV sales performance, driven partly by slowing momentum for ICE variants, increased competition, and risk-averse consumer sentiment ahead of the festive season.

Electric cars, however, were a bright spot last month. Tata sold 7,124 EVs in July 2025 (domestic + international), a resounding 42 per cent jump over the 5,031 units sold in July 2024. This is the company's all-time highest monthly EV sales number so far, consolidating Tata's leadership in India's electric passenger car market.

Commercial Vehicles Post Good Growth, Led by LCVs

The CV segment was a silver lining in July, recording 28,956 units sold, which was a 7 per cent increase over the 27,042 units sold in July 2024. The uplift was spearheaded by:

  • Increased sales of Intermediate & Light Commercial Vehicles (ILMCVs): Grew 17 per cent YoY as intra-city logistics and e-commerce demand continued to recover.
  • Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (MH&ICVs): Both trucks and buses increased 10 per cent YoY (domestic + exports), driven by infrastructure orders and a pre-festive uptick in demand from freight operators.
  • Export CV volumes: Went up by 57 per cent to 2,524 units, representing higher demand from African, Latin American, and ASEAN markets.

Notably, Tata Motors has also commenced trials of electric models in the CV segment, including buses and small cargo carriers. These mark the beginning of a long-term transition towards sustainable fleet mobility, underpinning central and state government fleet electrification initiatives.

What's Behind the PV Slowdown

While Tata's EV story continues to accelerate, its ICE-driven PV portfolio seems to have hit a seasonal plateau. Industry analysts attribute the PV slowdown to:

  • Waiting-for-festive mindset: Many buyers are holding back purchases, expecting new facelifts or good festive season offers.
  • Increased competition: Maruti Suzuki (Fronx Turbo variants), Hyundai (updated Creta, Exter CNG), and Mahindra (XUV 3XO, 3XO RevX) offerings are pulling market share.
  • Inventory recalibration: Dealerships will be clearing inventory to make way for arriving festive stock and 2026 model year changes.

Tata continues to benefit from its relatively broad portfolio across body styles, fuel types, and price segments, despite these tailwinds.

Outlook: Preparing for Festive Season Demand and New Launches

Going forward, Tata Motors will benefit from:

  • Sustained demand for EVs, especially if government subsidies persist until FY26.
  • A festive season pick-up is anticipated to commence in September, which typically results in a 20-25 per cent increase in monthly volumes.
  • New ICE variants and special editions to keep the PV portfolio current.

Tata's CV business is also on solid ground, fuelled by government infrastructure outlay and freight activity.
