Top Performers March 2025.jpg

Mahindra’s SUV-driven strategy keeps it close behind, while Kia’s consistent growth signals its increasing foothold in the Indian market.

The Indian automotive industry witnessed a total sale of 3.85 lakh units in March 2025, reflecting steady demand despite shifting consumer preferences and regulatory changes. While Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the market with a massive lead, Hyundai and Tata Motors remain locked in a tight battle for the second spot. Mahindra’s SUV-driven strategy keeps it close behind, while Kia’s consistent growth signals its increasing foothold in the Indian market. Toyota benefits from its JV with Maruti, but its stronghold in the premium SUV and MPV segments remains unshaken.

Maruti Suzuki: 1,51,000 Units

Maruti Suzuki maintained its dominance with stable sales figures. A significant move towards safety with the inclusion of six airbags as standard in models like Alto, Celerio, and Brezza is expected to improve brand perception and drive future growth. However, Maruti’s lack of fresh offerings in the C2 segment is evident. While models like the Fronx and Brezza continue to perform well, the introduction of the Grand Vitara 7-seater and the upcoming e-Vitara will be crucial in sustaining its market leadership.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza clocked 188,160 units in CY2024.

Hyundai: 67,320 units

Reclaiming its second position, Hyundai’s portfolio remains strong, though the brand is overly reliant on the Venue and Creta for volume. The i10 and Verna require facelifts to stay competitive. Introducing the 1.0L Turbo in the Exter at a price point significantly lower than the Venue could attract a broader consumer base and enhance sales figures.

2024 Hyundai Creta Facelift
Hyundai Creta managed to retail 186,919 units in CY24-25.

Tata Motors: 51,872 units

Tata Motors’ focus on safety and Indian consumer preferences continues to pay dividends. The Punch and Nexon remain key volume drivers, though the brand’s dependence on these models raises sustainability concerns. The anticipated Altroz facelift, along with upcoming models like the Harrier EV and Sierra (both ICE and EV), position Tata well for future growth. The company’s investment in IPL marketing for the Curvv is a strategic move, but the introduction of a powerful 1.5L GDI petrol engine for the Sierra, Harrier, and Safari would further strengthen its portfolio.

Tata Punch
The Punch was the best performer for the company clocking 202,031 units in CY25.

Mahindra: 48,048 units

Mahindra’s robust portfolio of premium SUVs, including the Scorpio-N and XUV700, continues to drive strong numbers. The commencement of EV deliveries makes it essential to track their contribution to overall sales. However, the absence of a mass-market CNG option and a naturally aspirated petrol engine raises concerns. A new C2-segment SUV with a fresh design could improve long-term prospects, while a sub-₹15 lakh EV would cater to the growing demand in the electric segment.

The Thar Roxx and the 3-door Thar managed decent sales for the company.

Toyota: 30,043 units

Toyota’s partnership with Maruti Suzuki remains a key factor behind its strong performance. The Hyryder, Hycross/Innova, and Fortuner continue to command consistent demand. However, the lack of an original Toyota model under ₹18 lakh remains a notable gap in its lineup.

Kia: 25,525 units

With a 19% annual growth rate, Kia’s success can be attributed to the Sonet, Seltos, and Carens' strong performance and the newly launched Syros. The brand enjoys aspirational value in its segments but needs to proactively address concerns about safety ratings for the Syros, Carens, and Seltos by voluntarily getting them tested.

Skoda: 7,422 units

Skoda has managed decent numbers, largely due to the Kushaq and Slavia. The Kylaq has contributed positively, but the brand must maintain its momentum with competitive pricing and feature updates.

Honda: 7,228 units

Despite a modest performance, Honda’s lineup—comprising the Amaze, City, and Elevate—deserves better numbers. Introducing an OEM-fitted CNG option for the Amaze could attract budget-conscious buyers. Additionally, the brand’s 10-year warranty program for City and Elevate requires better marketing, possibly through high-visibility campaigns like IPL sponsorships.

The Elevate was been raking in decent sales for the company over the past year.

MG Motor: 5,500 Units

The success of the Windsor EV highlights the potential of well-priced, feature-rich electric vehicles. However, the sluggish sales of the Astor and Hector indicate that MG may benefit from prioritizing its EV lineup in India.
