Indian auto industry sold over 1.6 crore units in the last six months.
The Indian automobile industry sold over 3.95 lakh cars in October 2023, as per the latest report by the Society of Indian Manufacturers (SIAM). Furthermore, during the six-month period between April and October 2023, the industry sold slightly over 28 lakh cars. All figures in this report include domestic sales as well as exports during the two mentioned time periods.
The SUV segment has been doing increasingly well recently and October is no different it sold more than hatchbacks, sedans and vans combined. According to SIAM’s report, the industry produced 2,16,215 SUVs in October 2023 and 15,20,418 units between April and October 2023. Hatchback and sedans (categorised as passenger vehicle segment by SIAM) combined had a combined production of 1,65,213 units last month, with 11,91,128 units produced in the last six months. Similarly, the industry sold a total of 13,869 vans in October 2023 and 91,645 vans during the last six months (April-October 2023). Interestingly, these figures do not include data from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, JLR, Tata Motors and Volvo.
In the two-wheeler category, the industry sold a total of 21,87,075 units including domestic sales and exports in October 2023. This includes total motorcycle sales of 14,99,711 units, scooter sales of 6,33,854 units and moped sales of 53,510 units. In the six-month period between April and October 2023, the industry saw total sales of 1,26,12,388 two-wheelers which includes 85,71,076 motorcycles, 37,64,181 scooters and 277,131 mopeds sales.
The industry on a whole recorded total sales of 26,85,227 units including domestic sales and exports. The industry also recorded cumulative sales of 1,60,15,335 units between April and October 2023. Notably, this also includes three-wheeler sales of 1,02,474 units in October 2023 and 5,97,318 units in the last six months.
