Bahu Balli Cattle Fence to Ensure Highway Safety: Nitin Gadkari

In a significant move to enhance road safety and mitigate the risk posed by stray cattle on highways, the Indian government is planning to implement the Bahu Balli Cattle Fence, a 1200 mm high fence that will be installed on Section 23 of NH-30 as a comprehensive solution. Recognising the urgency to address this persistent issue, Gadkari emphasised the importance of implementing a robust solution that offers a reliable barrier to prevent cattle from straying onto highways. The Bahu Balli Cattle Fence is essentially constructed using bamboo, treated with creosote oil, and coated with HDPE, making it a stronger alternative to steel. Moreover, the fence has a fire rating of Class 1, minimising harm to wildlife and cattle.

Stray cattle wandering onto highways have been a major concern in India, leading to numerous accidents and fatalities. These incidents not only pose a significant risk to motorists but also result in economic losses and traffic congestion. By implementing the Bahu Balli Cattle Fence, the government aims to ensure the safety of road users while maintaining the smooth flow of traffic.
