The Sunny EV could be positioned as an entry-level electric scooter by Bajaj Auto.
Retro seems to be the theme that’s working for a lot of brands and Bajaj Auto has plans to revive one of its most iconic scooters, the Bajaj Sunny. While a lot of youngsters wouldn’t connect much with the Sunny, it was a cute little scooter sold in the 1990s. In fact, Sachin Tendulkar was the brand ambassador for the scooter back in the day. The Bajaj Sunny was powered by a puny 60 cc two-stroke engine, which seems almost comical in today's day and age, but it got the job done back in the day.
Why are we talking so much about a scooter that has been long discontinued? A test mule has been spotted testing on the outskirts of Pune and while it looks like the old Sunny, what’s interesting is its electric powertrain. It seems that Bajaj plans to bring back the Sunny in an electric avatar. Right from the three-spoke wheels, chunky mudguard to the slim apron and footboard, all the body panels of the test mule is very similar to the Bajaj Sunny.
What’s very intriguing is that the battery pack has been positioned above the footboard and this looks like a very early prototype. The Bajaj Sunny EV test mule was seen using a hub-mounted motor, which is typically used on affordable electric scooters. The Bajaj Chetak on the other hand sports a Bosch-sourced midrive motor. Since Bajaj also manufactures the Yulu Miracle GR and Dex GR, we think the Sunny EV could be based on the same platform.
While the Yulu scooters are limited to 25 kmph and don’t require a driving licence, the Bajaj Sunny electric scooter could have better performance and range. It could be positioned as a cheaper alternative to the Bajaj Chetak, but given how crude the prototype was, we think it’s too early to make any speculation. But if Bajaj does plan to make an affordable electric scooter for both B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) markets, the Sunny EV does look like a good move given its brand recall.
