BatX Energies’ battery recycling process project is capable of recovering up to 99% of lithium, cobalt, and nickel.
Gurugram-based BatX Energies has received financial support from the Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology, to further scale up its battery recycling project. The project, titled “Technologies for generation of battery-grade materials and value addition through closed loop,” will focus on commercialising its indigenous hydrometallurgical process to extract battery-grade materials. This process can recover up to 99% of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese from used lithium-ion batteries.
BatX Energies' proprietary process requires low temperature and pressure to work. It has a dual-mode (wet and dry) black mass recovery system with recovery rates between 97% and 99%. This is an end-to-end process, so it includes everything from battery collection to shredding, metal leaching, and downstream purification. BatX Energies has developed and patented this technology entirely. The brand has applied for seven patents, two of which have been granted to date.
With the newly received financial support, BatX Energies will expand operations beyond the existing pilot unit to accommodate full-scale commercial production. Via this, the company aims to contribute to the nation’s race to reduce dependency on rare earth mineral imports. BatX Energies is not the only player in this sector, though. There’s another Gurugram-based company called Lohum, which inaugurated its first battery-grade lithium refinery earlier this year. Just like BatX, even Lohum’s refining operations achieve recovery rates exceeding 90%. Besides refining, Lohum is also developing production capabilities for Cathode Active Materials, which are used in Li-ion battery manufacturing.
