Passengers travelling through Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Terminal 2 (T2) will soon experience a more efficient and hassle-free security screening process, eliminating the need to remove personal electronic devices from hand baggage during pre-embarkation checks. Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator of KIA, has confirmed the initiation of trial runs for the new Computer Tomography X-ray (CTX) machine at T2 beginning in the next few weeks, as per a report by MoneyControl.
The trial is initially aimed at domestic passengers, with the system expected to be fully operational by December 2023. With this, KIA will become the first airport in India to conduct passenger trials for the CTX machine, which will be seamlessly integrated with the Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) and full-body scanners. This promises heightened security along with significant boosts in operational efficiency.
The CTX system allows passengers to keep electronic devices like laptops as well as liquids, gels and aerosols (LAGs) within carry-on bags while passing through security screening. This significantly reduces the number of trays required per passenger during checks, enabling a quicker divesting process and fewer contact points.
Moreover, the CTX machine will eliminate the current practice of manual pat-downs after initial metal detector screenings, emphasizing greater process automation and precision in balancing both security and passenger convenience. Equipped with automatic explosives detection algorithms, the advanced 3D imaging capabilities of the machine will deliver superior screening outcomes.
Operators will have the flexibility to rotate bag item views to minimize unnecessary re-checks and physical inspections. The new system aims to reduce screening time at checkpoints by facilitating a simpler process with fewer bag items to remove.
