The crash test protocol will help provide star ratings for cars.

We’ve all been fighting the battle of safer cars for India, and with the launch of Bharat NCAP, there is much respite for those looking for cars that are built to ensure the safety of the passengers. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launched Bharat NCAP, and the focus is to build cars in India that are at par with global standards. Here are a few things you need to know about it.

Is it mandatory for all new cars to undergo a crash test under Bharat NCAP?

No. Right now, the manufacturer can volunteer to crash test its car.

What tests will be run on cars?

The Bharat NCAP safety rating protocol will include frontal impact, side impact, and side pole impact tests.

What will be the cost of testing a car under the Bharat NCAP programme?

According to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the cost will be around Rs 60 lakh, whereas a similar test would require around Rs 2.5 crore if done overseas.

At what speed will the cars be crash-tested?

The front impact test will be against an offset deformable barrier at a speed of 64 kmph, which is the same as the Global NCAP protocol. All vehicles also need to meet pedestrian protection norms. The pole impact test will only be carried out for cars securing 3 stars and above at a speed of 29 kmph. 

What are the standard safety features required for a car to achieve higher ratings?

For any car to carry a 3 or higher star rating, it must also have electronic stability control and front seat belt reminders fitted.

Which cars qualify for the Bharat NCAP crash test?

Vehicles falling under the M1 category that have been approved for carrying up to eight passengers, in addition to the driver, These cars should have a gross weight lower than 3.5 tonnes; and are either manufactured or imported into the country.
