Bharat Taxi was formally introduced by Amit Shah in the Parliament as a new cooperative-based, government-backed online cab aggregator in March 2025.
Ola and Uber will face another strong rival in the ride hailing industry named Bharat Taxi. Backed by the Government of India, Bharat Taxi was launched on a pilot basis in Delhi on 2 December 2025, and it is currently averaging 5,500 rides daily. These include 4,000 from the airport and around 1,500 from all the other locations.
A recent PTI report confirms that the Bharat Taxi will be officially launched in Delhi and other cities by the end of January, following a positive response from the pilot. The report adds that the application, available in both Android and iOS, has witnessed a surge in user interest within days of its launch, recording tens of thousands of new registrations each day.
The digital platform is operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Ltd, an undertaking of the Ministry of Cooperation, which is being promoted by eight leading cooperative organisations including Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), KRIBHCO, NCDC, NDDB, NCEL, IFFCO, NABARD and NAFED. The cooperative also has elected driver representatives on its board, giving drivers a direct say in how the platform is run.
The Ministry of Cooperation recently stated that Bharat Taxi has surpassed 400,000 registered customers. Over the last couple of days, the platform has been onboarding approximately 40,000–45,000 users daily. The app currently ranks ninth on the Google Play Store and 13th on the Apple App Store, while its driver-focused version stands at 20th on the Play Store. More than 1.4 lakh drivers have already signed up on the platform.
The application offers a variety of features including mobile ride booking, transparent fares, real-time vehicle tracking, multi-lingual support and round-the-clock customer service. Further, the app will be connected to services like the Metro for wider connectivity. A key highlight of the initiative is that the platform does not levy any commission on drivers, unlike aggregators such as Ola and Uber, which typically charge commissions of around 20–30 percent.

In addition, drivers will be eligible for several benefits, including annual dividends, a share in the cooperative’s profits, and insurance coverage. Passengers, meanwhile, will benefit from the absence of time-based surge pricing, along with enhanced safety measures through thorough driver verification prior to onboarding.
