The Madras Motor Club played a pivotal role in hosting an annual non-championship Indian Grand Prix in Madras.

In the midst of the excitement surrounding this month's Indian MotoGP, it's worth taking a moment to delve into the annals of history and uncover a lesser-known chapter in India's motorsport legacy. While the upcoming event marks a significant milestone in Indian motorcycle racing, it's not the country's first encounter with the thrill of international two-wheel competition.

Many decades ago, the Madras Motor Club, now known as the Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC), played a pivotal role in hosting an annual non-championship Indian Grand Prix in Madras, modern-day Chennai. This event, held each February, provided a platform for riders to showcase their skills and machines in a spirited contest.

One notable year in the history of this competition was 1980, when Phil Henderson, astride his Yamaha TZ750, clinched victory in a display of speed and skill that would be etched into the memories of racing enthusiasts. The event was documented through the lens of photographer Alfred Noakes, whose images captured the essence of the competition and the passion of the riders.

The Madras Motor Club's efforts in organizing these races contributed to developing the motorsport community in India, nurturing local talent and fostering a love for motorcycle racing. While the Indian MotoGP event on the horizon signifies a new era in Indian motorsport, it's essential to acknowledge and remember these early endeavours that paved the way for the sport's growth in the country.

As we eagerly await the Indian MotoGP, let's take a moment to pay tribute to the legacy of the Madras Motor Club's annual Indian Grand Prix, a testament to the enduring spirit of motorcycle racing in India. This rich history serves as a reminder of the passion and dedication of those who have shaped the motorsport landscape in the country and the exciting journey that lies ahead.

India will host the 13th round of the MotoGP round at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh between September 22-24, 2023. After 11 rounds, Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) leads the championship with 260 points followed by Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) with 210 points. At the same time, Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) competes at P3 with 189 points.
