Mahindra is gearing up to electrify the Indian and global car market with the unveiling of its much-anticipated XEV 9e and BE 6e electric SUVs. These models, slated for a global debut at the Unlimit India on November 26, 2024, in Chennai, represent Mahindra’s ambitious entry into the mainstream electric vehicle (EV) market. With its futuristic designs and cutting-edge technology, these SUVs are expected to shake up the segment.
At the heart of the XEV 9e and BE 6e lies Mahindra’s ground-breaking INGLO platform. This dedicated electric vehicle architecture has been designed from scratch to meet the demands of modern EVs, representing a shift from Mahindra's earlier EV efforts, which relied on adapting internal combustion engine (ICE) platforms. The INGLO platform is a critical piece of Mahindra's strategy to establish itself as a competitive global EV player.
1. Advanced Battery Technology for Power and Efficiency
INGLO is equipped with robust battery options of 59 kWh and 79 kWh, using advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry. This ensures superior durability and safety. Unlike traditional battery setups, INGLO utilises a cell-to-pack technology, streamlining the assembly process for improved reliability and weight efficiency.
Mahindra claims these battery packs have been designed to alleviate range anxiety, a key concern for EV buyers. Additionally, the platform supports ultra-fast charging, allowing the battery to go from 20 to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes with a 175 kW DC charger. This makes the INGLO platform not only suitable for city commutes but also capable of enabling seamless long-distance travel.
2. Intelligent Thermal Management
One of the standout features of the INGLO platform is its advanced thermal management system. By continuously monitoring and optimising battery performance, the system ensures that the battery maintains consistent power delivery and longevity. This design enhances reliability across diverse climates and terrains, which is especially critical for a market as geographically varied as India.
3. Globally Compatible Charging Standards
The platform supports global charging protocols, ensuring compatibility with an array of charging infrastructures worldwide. This makes the XEV 9e and BE 6e suitable not just for the Indian market but also for international markets where Mahindra aims to establish a foothold.
Mahindra has promised that the production versions of the XEV 9e and BE 6e will stay faithful to its concept designs, a rarity in the automotive world. Early teasers reveal sharply sculpted exteriors with a coupe-SUV silhouette, aggressive lines, and aerodynamic flourishes.
Key design features include:
The BE 6e also features an indented hood scoop, which appears to prioritise aerodynamic efficiency, while both models sit on newly designed alloy wheels optimised for airflow. These design choices position Mahindra’s offerings as premium products, challenging conventional SUV aesthetics.
Inside, both SUVs promise a high-tech, immersive experience.
Mahindra has hinted at competitive technical specifications for the XEV 9e and BE 6e, including:
Both models will debut as rear-wheel-drive variants, with an all-wheel-drive BE 6e reportedly in the pipeline.
Mahindra is positioning the XEV 9e and BE 6e as flagship offerings within its born-electric range, targeting buyers seeking innovation and a “wow” factor. The coupe-SUV design is a clear differentiator, contrasting with the more traditional boxy designs of rivals. These models also reflect Mahindra’s intention to establish a premium EV brand image, leveraging radical designs, tech-rich interiors, and advanced performance metrics to stand out in an increasingly crowded market.
For Mahindra, these launches are more than just new vehicle debuts—both symbolise the company’s transformation into a global EV contender. By betting big on design and technology, Mahindra hopes to capture the imagination of a growing EV customer base.
