CAFE

Seven brands have been flagged for crossing the mandated fleet emissions.

Many of the country’s top automotive manufacturers are set to face huge penalties for violating the updated emissions norms. These regulations, called Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE II) norms, came into effect earlier this year and required manufacturers to maintain average emissions based on the cars sold and their emissions.

These penalties come when the majority of the country’s biggest cities are battling with very hazardous levels of air quality and high pollution levels. According to a report by Times of India, manufacturers like Kia, Hyundai, Honda, Renault, Nissan, Skoda-Volkswagen and Force Motors will have to pay huge fines for violating their mandated fleet emissions under the CAFE II norms. Furthermore, these fines are calculated for the period between January and March 2023.

The report states that according to the finding by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), the biggest penalty will be faced by Kia India, amounting to ₹373 crore. As per the findings, Kia has crossed its emissions threshold by 7.730 g/km and its CAFE was set at 129.875 g/km. The second worst culprit according to BEE is Kia’s sister concern, Hyundai India. The South Korean brand will have to shell out $369.3 crore as it was 4.493 g/km over its threshold of 120.273 g/km.

On the other hand, brands like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, MG Motor India, Toyota and more will not face any penalties since they meet their required CAFE norms. Tata Motors was 12.060 g/km below its threshold of 106.759 g/km, while Maruti Suzuki saved itself from a penalty by being 2.553 g/km less than its required 104.73 g/km.

According to the sources in the report, Mahindra may be on the brink of paying fines for violating CAFE norms but the brand has indicated its fleet emissions were under the prescribed limit.

We have reached out to the respective companies regarding this but have not yet received any response.
