Does the Goldstar 650 have what it takes to become as popular as the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650?
After months of waiting, the arrival of the BSA Goldstar 650 on Indian soil has finally been confirmed. Slated for official launch on Independence Day, i.e. August 15, the BSA Goldstar 650 will also mark the debut of Classic Legends in the premium 650 cc category, which is heavily populated by Royal Enfield with its 650 cc, parallel-twin models. Out of which, the RE Interceptor 650 will be Goldstar 650’ main rival, in terms of stylisation, engine specs, etc. So out of the two roadster motorcycles, which one sounds more impressive on the paper?
Specifications | BSA Goldstar 650 | Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 |
Length | NA | 2122 mm |
Width | NA | 789 mm |
Height | NA | 1165 mm |
Fuel Capacity | 12-litre | 13.7-litre |
Saddle Height | 780 mm | 804 mm |
Ground Clearance | NA | 174 mm |
Wheelbase | 1425 mm | 1400 mm |
Kerb Weight | 213 kg | 202 kg |
The BSA Gold Star 650 is built around a double-cradle tubular steel frame, complemented by a 41mm telescopic forks and adjustable twin-shock absorbers. It rides on 18-inch wheels shod with Pirelli Phantom Sportscomp tyres suggests good handling.
The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 employs a similar frame design with a bolted truss and matching suspension setup. While both bikes embrace retro styling, the Interceptor is slightly lighter at 202 kg compared to the Gold Star's 213 kg. However, The BSA's longer wheelbase might offer more stability during highway cruising. While the BSA is heavier, the seat height is much lower than the Interceptor 650 and this should be beneficial for shorter riders.
Specifications | BSA Goldstar 650 | Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 |
Engine | Liquid-cooled, single cylinder, DOHC, 4V | Parallel twin, 4-stroke, single overhead cam, air/oil-cooled |
Power | 44.9 bhp@6000 rpm | 46.8 bhp@7150 rpm |
Torque | 55 Nm@4000 rpm | 52 Nm@5250 rpm |
Transmission | 5-speed manual | 6-speed manual |
The Gold Star 650 is powered by a 652cc single-cylinder engine, producing 44.97 bhp and 55 Nm of torque. BSA claims strong low-end torque, which could translate to responsive city riding and relaxed cruising. In contrast, the Interceptor 650 features a 648cc parallel-twin engine, delivering 46.99 bhp and 52 Nm of torque. The single-cylinder configuration of the Gold Star might provide a different character compared to the Interceptor's twin, potentially offering more immediate torque response at lower RPMs and better refinement levels. With respect to refinement, the Royal Enfield should have an edge owing to its twin-cylinder layout, whereas the BSA engine is more modern as it employs liquid cooling technology.
Both motorcycles prioritize a classic riding experience over modern technology. However, the BSA Gold Star includes a USB charging port and a 12V socket, which could be beneficial in the long run concerning charging your mobile navigation devices. But the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 sticks to its guns with the bare minimum. While last year’s update did see the bike gain new LED headlights and alloy wheel design (finally gets tubeless tyres), and new switch gears, in essence, it is still that old-school bike with a dual-analogue instrument cluster.
The BSA Goldstar 650 will be the only bike of its kind to be powered by a 650 cc, single-cylinder engine. Coupled with the fact that it will be manufactured in our country, we expect it to launch with quite a competitive price tag. And this could make matters tough for the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, which currently starts from ₹3.03 lakh. So, while the upcoming BSA Goldstar 650 reads similar to the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, it’s price will be the deciding factor, whether it will command more value over the latter or not.
