The service, developed in collaboration with California-based Viasat, marks India's first venture into consumer satellite communications.

State-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has unveiled its satellite-to-device connectivity service in the country. This service aims to revolutionise communication in areas where traditional networks struggle to reach.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) calls this "India's first Satellite-to-Device service." The service, developed in collaboration with California-based Viasat, marks India's first venture into consumer satellite communications.

"BSNL launches India’s 1st Satellite-to-Device service! Seamless connectivity now reaches India’s remotest corners," DoT made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter.

Coverage 'Everywhere'

The new Direct-to-Device technology by BSNL aims to bridge critical communication gaps across India's diverse landscape. Whether at the pristine Chandratal Lake in Spiti Valley or in remote Rajasthan villages, users can now maintain essential connections with the outside world.

Features And Digital Payment Solutions

BSNL’s Direct-to-Device satellite connectivity package includes:

  • Emergency call capabilities
  • SOS messaging systems
  • UPI payment functionality in network-dark zones

During its debut at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024, US-based Viasat demonstrated the system's impressive capabilities by successfully communicating with geostationary satellites orbiting 36,000km above Earth. This two-way non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity showcases the robust nature of the technology.

While satellite communication isn't new globally -- with companies like Apple already offering similar services on their iPhone 14 series -- BSNL's initiative marks the first time such technology will be available to regular Indian consumers.

Earlier, satellite communications in India were restricted to emergency services and military operations.
