BYD has produced 15 million NEVs. Strong sales and R&D drove global expansion, especially in Europe.
BYD has produced its 15 millionth new energy vehicle, encompassing battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. The achievement highlights accelerating global demand, with the company taking 13 years for the first million units but only 13 months to add the last five million.
The landmark vehicle, a Denza N8L plug-in hybrid SUV, was assembled at BYD's Jinan plant in China, which began operations three years ago. The six-seater model, aimed at family buyers seeking fuel savings, is priced from RMB 299,800 (approximately ₹3,813,600).
Founded in 1995 as a battery manufacturer, BYD entered the automotive sector in 2003 and launched its first plug-in hybrid, the F3DM, in 2008. In March 2022, it ceased pure ICE vehicle production, shifting entirely to electrified models. The company now employs over 900,000 people, including a 110,000-strong R&D team.
From January to November 2025, BYD sold 4,182,038 vehicles globally, up 11.3% year-on-year. Exports reached 917,000 units, with products available in over 110 regions. The 14 millionth unit was made at its Brazil factory in October 2025.
R&D investment totaled RMB 43.75 billion in the first three quarters of 2025, part of over RMB 220 billion spent historically. This supports advancements like Flash Charging and enhanced autonomous features.
In Europe, BYD operates in 33 countries with around 1,000 sales points, planning to double that by end-2026. The company also sells four cars in India: eMAX 7, Seal, Sealion 7, and Atto 3, however, all of them are positioned in the premium (₹25 lakh+) segment.
