In a significant leap from design consultancy, CALLUM, the renowned design and engineering company, has announced its foray into the electric vehicle market with the introduction of the Callum Skye. Breaking new ground, the Skye is the company's first proprietary vehicle, marking a departure from their traditional design consultancy role.
Designed to cater to discerning owners seeking on- and off-road adventures, the Callum Skye distinguishes itself in the compact multi-terrain vehicle segment with a blend of sophistication and rugged practicality. The vehicle features a 2+2 layout, said to provide a comfortable and refined cabin environment, with the intent to set it apart from its counterparts.
Measuring 4000 mm in length, the Skye boasts an exterior design driven by its capabilities. According to Ian Callum, the head of design at Callum, the vehicle has been crafted to exceed expectations, offering minimal mass, maximum capability, and an exceptional driving experience.
“At four metres long, the Callum Skye is dramatically proportioned with a concise exterior aesthetic driven by its capabilities. It has been designed to exceed expectations: minimal mass, maximum capability – exceptionally usable and an absolute joy to drive,” explains Ian Callum, head of design at CALLUM.
The exterior design of the Skye has an accent loop intersected by a horizontal structure, flanked by organic forms both at the front and rear. The vehicle's design is focused on necessity and understatement, with integrated glass in the lower section of the doors providing visibility in all conditions.
Underneath its sculpted exterior, the Skye is an all-electric, all-wheel-drive vehicle designed to be on-road while maintaining off-road capabilities. The rugged space frame chassis with trail-capable suspension offers appropriate ground clearance and comfort across diverse terrains. The 42 kWh lithium-ion battery is expected to provide a range of 273 km, with an option for an advanced, ultra-fast charging battery capable of a full charge in under 10 minutes.
With a target dry weight of 1,150 kg and a balanced 50/50 weight distribution, the Skye aims to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in under 4 seconds. Whether navigating meandering roads or challenging terrains, the Skye is said to be positioned as a versatile vehicle ready for any adventure with a fully enclosed cabin that eliminates the need for specialised attire, emphasising CALLUM's aim to offer unrestrained fun without the mess or hassle associated with traditional off-road experiences.
Currently undergoing engineering refinement and rigorous testing in the UK and Europe, Callum plans to release detailed specifications and curated variants tailored for specific on- or off-road use in Spring 2024.
