Motability Operations, an organisation delivering the life-changing Motability Scheme to disabled individuals across the UK, has introduced the innovative eVITA concept—a next-generation electric wheelchair-accessible vehicle (eWAV). Developed in collaboration with CALLUM, this concept addresses the unique needs of passenger WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) users during the transition to small/medium electric vehicles (EVs).

Incorporating inclusive design principles and insights gathered from Motability Scheme customers, eVITA aims to ensure that wheelchair users are not left behind in the shift towards electric mobility. With over 750,000 customers reliant on their vehicles for independence, Motability Operations emphasizes the importance of making the transition to EVs accessible to all.
The eVITA concept addresses common challenges faced by WAV users, particularly regarding interior space limitations caused by floor-mounted batteries in many EVs. By reengineering the battery placement to optimize interior space and reduce overall height, eVITA offers a flat floor design that facilitates smooth wheelchair access and accommodates passengers comfortably.
Key features of eVITA include a sleek exterior design with a spacious interior, multiple charging ports for accessibility, and innovative lighting systems to ensure safe operation and easy access for wheelchair users. The vehicle's design prioritizes functionality and versatility, with customizable features aimed at enhancing user experience and independence.
The collaboration between Motability Operations and CALLUM underscores the importance of inclusive design in the automotive industry's transition to electric mobility. By sharing their expertise and insights, both organizations seek to encourage the adoption of inclusive design principles throughout the industry, ensuring that disabled individuals are not overlooked in the EV transition.
