CERT-In has issued a warning for users of Android smartphones in the country.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning for users of Android smartphones in the country. CERT-In under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) revealed that multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Android OS versions 11, 12, 12L and 13, which can allow hackers to gain access to users' sensitive information.
Android is one of India's most used mobile operating systems, powering Google Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus and other popular smartphones. However, many users do not update their OS regularly, which makes their devices prone to security risks from exposed vulnerabilities.
According to the warning, the vulnerabilities exist due to flaws in components like Framework, System, Google Play system updates, Kernel LTS, Arm, MediaTek & Qualcomm components and others. If successfully exploited, these could let cybercriminals execute arbitrary code, gain elevated privileges, access sensitive user information and cause denial of service on the targeted devices.
The Indian government has advised all Android users to be cautious and apply the necessary patches and updates mentioned by Google. Google periodically releases security updates, but many users skip them due to various reasons like low storage, lack of data or finding the process cumbersome.
With smartphones now being used for almost everything from banking to social media and storage of personal data, it is critical for users to keep their devices and apps updated to avoid falling prey to cyber fraud.
