New Delhi city authorities will impound bike taxis operated by Uber and Ola if they continue to operate
The New Delhi city authorities will impound Uber and Ola bike taxis for defying the ban, citing license violations if they continue to ply in the capital city. The Supreme Court stayed the High Court ruling and now awaits a new policy while the Delhi government prioritises passenger safety. Here's everything you need to know.
New Delhi city authorities will impound bike taxis operated by Uber and Ola if they continue to operate in violation of a court-ordered ban.
India's top court supported the ban on bike taxis, which was a blow to Uber's legal challenge to continue offering the services.
The Supreme Court stayed the High Court's order that allowed bike-taxi aggregators to operate until a new policy was formulated.
The Delhi government argues that bike taxis violate local laws requiring a license for such services, while Uber claims the ban harms the livelihoods of its riders.
If the companies do not comply with the ban, their vehicles will be impounded.
Uber and Ola's bike taxi services were still available on their apps in Delhi, at the time of writing.
The Delhi government's final policy on bike taxis will be notified by the end of July.
The top court had sought a response from the Central government on the Delhi government's pleas regarding bike-taxi aggregators.
In May, the Delhi government approved the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Scheme 2023 to regulate cab aggregators and delivery service providers in the city.
The scheme includes mandatory panic buttons in taxis, integration with the emergency number '112,' and a transition to electric vehicles in phases.
The scheme applies to individuals or entities operating or managing a fleet of motor vehicles for passenger transportation or delivery services.
