The move aims to curb the rising menace of cybercrime through fraudulent misuse of USSD call forwarding code.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed telecom operators to suspend USSD-based call forwarding services starting April 15th. The move aims to curb the rising menace of cybercrime through fraudulent misuse of USSD call forwarding code.
In a notification issued last week, the DoT highlighted frequent instances of USSD code *401# being exploited to forward calls illegally without the subscriber's consent. Criminals trick users into dialling this code, followed by their number, by impersonating as customer support. It usually enables forwarding all calls to the fraudster.
Users commonly use USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) to check balances, block numbers, etc., by dialling simple codes. However, the DoT found this system vulnerable to such social engineering attacks.
After April 15th, subscribers will no longer be able to activate call forwarding using *401#. Telecom operators have been instructed to offer alternative activation methods. While the new process has not been specified yet, it will likely be through dedicated mobile apps or toll-free numbers.
The order aims to plug this loophole that is being exploited by perpetrators for scams and identity thefts. Recently, advisories have been issued regarding mysterious calls instructing callers to dial USSD codes or approach through fake WhatsApp IDs.
Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant of such threats and report any suspected fraudulent activity on the government's cybercrime reporting portal. Users should also check out the national helpline 1930 and website for cybercrime assistance.
