Due to the new compressor the intake air can be compressed at rates that are not controlled by the engine rpm. What does that mean?
The EICMA 2024 motorcycle show has been one helluva of a ride, with not just new motorcycles being showcased, manufacturers are also debuting new exciting and efficient engines. While Ducati started off early by unveiling the new, refined, and lighter V2 – Honda took matters to another level by giving the world its first V3 engine. Yes, Honda will soon be producing bikes that will be powered by a V3 engine. But the exact timeline for them is still under wraps. What we know for or sure is that this revolutionary engine will be used to power a large displacement motorcycle in the future.
The water-cooled V3 engine will have a 73-degree crankshaft. It will be built for larger displacement bikes, so expect oodles of torque with ample performance on offer. However, the nature of that performance and the exact engine displacement is still under wraps.
The icing on the cake has to be the new electric compressor. Honda says this new unit has allowed it to control the compression of the intake air, without making it dependent on the engine rpm. So, no matter what the rpm is, the bike can easily pull with “high-response torque” in any gear at low rpm. Furthermore, the electric compressor has also opened up a lot of space that gives the freedom to experiment with several layouts, and further help the efficient centralisation of mass.
As mentioned before, Honda did state in the press release that the new V3 engine will see mass production. And the engine will be applied to larger capacity motorcycles. All that remains to be seen is what genre the first motorcycle with a V3 engine be? A supersport, naked or a cruiser? What we can say for sure is Honda engineers have taken a new challenge on their hands and if they are able to execute this concept, a fun riding experience is guaranteed for sure.
