While overall EV market penetration in India remains below double digits, the two-wheeler segment shows promising growth potential.
As the global debate between traditional combustion engines and electric vehicles (EVs) continues to intensify, one homegrown startup remains optimistic about the future of electric mobility. Despite concerns about plateauing EV sales worldwide and hesitation from established automakers, Ather Energy predicts a significant transformation in India's transportation landscape within the decade, according to a recent report.
According to a recent interview with The Economic Times, Ather Energy forecast that electric vehicles could capture 40 per cent of India's two-wheeler market by 2031. Tarun Mehta, Co-founder and CEO of Ather, believes electric scooters will dominate new scooter sales by that time.
While overall EV market penetration in India remains below double digits, the two-wheeler segment shows promising growth potential. Data from the last financial year reveals electric two-wheelers already commanded a 58.49 per cent share of total EVs sold in the country.
Ather Energy is investing heavily in its new EL scooter platform, which will be produced at its manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (formerly Aurangabad), Maharashtra. The EL platform emphasizes scalability, enabling increased production volumes while maintaining cost efficiency. Mehta emphasized that expanding their scooter lineup and form factors will allow more competitive pricing.
The company's upcoming Maharashtra facility represents a significant expansion compared to its current Hosur plant. While the existing factory has an annual production capacity of 450,000 units, the new plant will be able to manufacture one million units yearly. Future models based on the EL and Zenith platforms will be produced at this expanded facility.
